Tempura Kokyu

The space and the origin of our name

The space around our 10-seat counter, and where the name Tempura Kokyu comes from.

The space

Design concept (by Genzo Sugiki)

This restaurant is designed as two different spaces.

The first space

An inner entrance with a courtyard garden

Slide open the door of the purely Japanese exterior, and you enter a Kyoto-style inner entrance with a courtyard garden (tsuboniwa).

The second space

A stage for the tempura chef

Here you reset your mind, and when you open the second door, you enter a chic space with a completely different atmosphere. There, a stage for the tempura chef appears, made of a stone counter and stone walls. The counter is L-shaped, so you can watch the chef’s performance from the front, from the side and from behind.

With this ten-seat stage, the restaurant is complete: a place to feel food and people come together as one.

Genzo Sugiki

The restaurant was designed by Genzo Sugiki of Space Co., Ltd., Kyoto.

Origin of the name

Tempura Kokyu in brush lettering, with seal

The name Kokyu (幸久) was given to us by the head priest of Rakugaki-dera, a temple in Yawata, Kyoto Prefecture.

Rakugaki-dera is known as a temple where visitors write their wishes directly on the walls of the hall.

The meaning of the name

幸久

Kokyu

  • The name can also be read as koku, the depth of flavor that matters so much in cooking.
  • It expresses the wish to bring our guests happiness for many years, and for the restaurant to flourish for many years.

What we value

The time you spend with us
is your precious time.
Because you share that time with us,
Kokyu takes care to make
this a space you will enjoy.
